This is a beautiful short fiction Haley. It requires so much more finesse than non fiction and I’m amazed at how well this came together. With the vivid imagery and textured dialogue. And suspense. And the twist at the end with the book...

The idea of sacrifice is so good. More and more I think parents are beings of sacrifice. There’s joy, but at this essay shows, parents across history have given so much to provide a better lives for their children. Selfless but sad.

Loved it (:

So proud of you for going into the daunting territory of non-fiction. Your writing suits fiction so well. I'm excited about your future experiments.

I also love the sense of melancholic duty Pap willfully, and then regretfully, inherits. So many layers there. Well done, dear Ivy.

I was going to skim your story. It’s late and I was tired. As I began reading, your imagery drew me into this world you described so well. I held my breath several times as I became invested in Ivy’s safety. Your story is poignant. You made me care about the characters. I could understand their emotions and actions. Beautifully crafted tale, Haley.

I’m with JT, was going to read this last night and realized I didn’t have the time and attention to give to the emerging story. You did a fabulous job weaving the setting, with the story, and the perfect development of the characters. As the story went on I found myself more invested as you built the suspense beautifully. Love it Haley. I so admire your writing and you commitment to expanding your boundaries.

...loved all the little house books growing up...and really enjoyed how you used a time and setting in this piece that reflected on other times and settings (through the inclusion of pieces that hold similar spaces and familial dynamics)...sharp...thank you!...
